Working Across Regions

Within Northern Latitudes Partnerships are the Aleutian and Bering Sea Islands Initiative (ABSI)Western Alaska Partnership (WAP), and Northwest Boreal Partnership (NWBP), that each focus on and work in distinct geographical regions.

These Partnerships are diverse and cross-cutting, with almost 40 different entities serving at the leadership level on Steering Committees and a legacy of over 150 different project partners.

How We Work

Faced with large and complex issues in a rapidly changing North, it is clear that we are all stronger when we work together. When we identify common needs, share resources, create balanced and inclusive decision-making processes, and respect the values and needs of communities so deeply connected to natural systems, we can effectively work together to achieve our common goals. The priorities and work supported by the Northern Latitudes Partnerships are determined by the Steering Committee members that comprise the individual regional partnerships and each regional partnership has core staff that helps with coordination. Steering Committee members recognize each other as equals and value the neutral space created by each partnership where collaboration toward innovative, non-regulatory solutions is a key focus.

In gratitude to the partners and funders who support us

A commitment from the Alaska Conservation Foundation to support the Northern Latitudes Partnership resulted in foundational investment by the Volgenau Foundation. In addition, the Wildlife Management Institute provided key administrative support as a previous host institution for the Northwest Boreal Partnership staff. Core support and project funds have also been provided by the Wildlife Conservation Society, National Science Foundation, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Network for Landscape Conservation. These have resulted in a robust, public-private funding model supporting the Northern Latitudes Partnerships. In 2020, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also signed a five-year agreement to further sustain these partnerships through a mix of project and programmatic work.
